Yeah, people call me Sandstorm.

You seem like you've got some nerve. Want to play Russian Roulette with me?

Varracht-Face1.png Sandstorm Varracht

The Kartels...

In the old days, the Kartels were a group recognized for its free-thinking, intelligent youths, who gathered and dreamed about changing this ugly, unjust world.

Knew a lot of great guys in the Kartels back then. We thought the Kartels were a gift from God, given to us so we could change the world.

My friends sacrificed their lives to build the Kartels. Now I'm the only one left.

Somehow, it got out of hand. Our small group became militarized, and twisted. It morphed into a large army interested only in expanding its own power.

That's when I left. I've never regretted that choice. It wasn't the same organization that I'd joined so many years ago. Kartels or not, I won't allow my life to by run by other people.

Varracht-Face1.png Sandstorm Varracht

The Kartels are acting like a bunch of reckless criminals.

And, it's gotten worse after that arrogant Gizel joined them.

They need to be completely eliminated.

Varracht-Face1.png Sandstorm Varracht

I've experienced all types of craziness in my travels.

It's amazing I'm still alive. Ha!

Varracht-Face4.png Sandstorm Varracht

Am I a legend? *chuckle* Yeah, I'm aware of my nickname.

Here's the thing: I may have done some stuff while other so-called warriors stood on the side soiling their pants.

Gotta do what you gotta do, right? But then, those guys turn around and talk about me like I'm some kind of hero.

Fame's not that hard to get.

If fame is what you're after, why don't you rush that Kartels base over there? That'll spread your name around.

Hahaha. Seriously, though. You should do it. Don't waste your youth.

Never forget that life offers all sorts of possibilities.

Varracht-Face1.png Sandstorm Varracht

I know the Chief Guard, Zeldine Schneider, isn't all that fond of me.

She probably treats you the same way, acting all tough and giving you the cold shoulder. I can't hold a grudge against her, though, knowing the situation she's stuck with.

I guess I should be happy that I don't have that kind of responsibility resting on my shoulders. Not sayin' everyone should stop accepting responsibilities or anything.

Hey, I never claimed that my lifestyle was ideal.

(If the Adventurer has Frustration Penalty)
Varracht-Face2.png Sandstorm Varracht

Whoa, you're still alive!

Don't waste time tending your wounds and recovering. Recklessness is a virtue for youths.

Jump back into the fray now. Don't worry, your mind should still be sharp, even if your body's a bit weaker than usual.

(If the Adventurer fails Town Invasion)
Varracht-Face2.png Sandstorm Varracht

I heard something happened in the Underworld. You can't just ignore that now, can you?

Young people these days are so selfish.

Do you think the Underworld really exists?

Personally, I'd like to believe that it does. My favorite student fell into the sea above it. I hope she made it there alive.

Varracht-NFace1.png Sandstorm Varracht

I've heard there's a young genius in the Imperial Capital who easily outshines Gizel.

Rumor has it that Gizel even left the Seven Shards because he was jealous of this fellow.

Huh? What are the Seven Shards?

It'll take too long if I explain everything. Let's just say they're a group of scientists on a similar level to Gizel. They each are the best in their field, and receive support from the Royal Family as a research group.

Well, I've rambled long enough. If you have a chance, you should ask him to examine your body.

Who knows? Gizel might have planted something in your body that he shouldn't have.

Varracht-NFace1.png Sandstorm Varracht

Romance. That was the only thing my old friend and I wanted when we were young.

I don't like dwelling on the past, but sometimes I miss those days. It's probably because I'm getting old.

Never lose that intensity that I can see through your eyes. Never forget your goals. They'll guide you through the perilous journey ahead of you like a lighthouse shows the way for ships on the dark sea.

Do you have a dream? Did you sacrifice another dream for it? You have only one chance at living, but you're given enough time to make mistakes and make up for the mistakes.

Varracht-Face1.png Sandstorm Varracht

Youngsters look forward to their futures, while old geezers like I tend to reflect on the past.

But smart people look forward and back. Which type are you? To me you look like... Hah hah, I'll let you guess.

Varracht-Face1.png Sandstorm Varracht

The Kartel wasn't the ragtag of misfits they are now. It started as a group of radiant spirits that wanted to make a difference in the world.

Over time, they were replaced by selfish knuckleheads. The Kartel you know now isn't the Kartel I devoted my youth to. The group of today has nothing to do with me now.

(If the Adventurer is a Blitz)
Varracht-NFace1.png Sandstorm Varracht

Mm...? You... Judging by the gleaming intensity in your eyes, you've been doing well.

I'm happy to see you again, but you don't want to be seen talking to me.

I'm not exactly on good terms with the captain of the Garrison. I wouldn't want her to direct her wrath at you because of me.

(Post-Event: Agent's Secrets)
Varracht-NFace1.png Sandstorm Varracht

I think I just saw a familiar face. Or did I imagine it?

This place has heavy traffic. I wouldn't be surprised if I see one or two familiar faces, but that one didn't look like it belonged here. Hm, I don't know...

(Empyrean Revolt)
Varracht-Face1.png Sandstorm Varracht

Did you take the princess someplace safe? Good, I'd hate to see an innocent girl die.

By the way, the air in Ghent is getting stuffy. I don't like watching the nobles act as if they own this whole country. It nauseates me.

(Empyrean Revolt)
Varracht-Face1.png Sandstorm Varracht

Bentinck? He was captured again. He was running wild until he got caught by Zeldine and dragged back to prison. The sullen look on his face was priceless. Hah hah hah!

So many prisoners escaped this time. It'll be difficult to capture all of them, and I'm worried what kind of damage they might do before they're captured.

(Empyrean Revolt)
Varracht-Face1.png Sandstorm Varracht

Do the jerks in Ghent hate the people of the Lawless District so much? They insisted they all were the members of Empyrean when Anton showed up. Did they forget that already?

Those fools. The nobles dangle a carrot in front of them, and they can't see anything else. I can't believe I risked myself to protect them.

(Empyrean War)
Varracht-NFace1.png Sandstorm Varracht

The atmosphere in Ghent is quite murky. It's hard to believe that the city was filled with people and laughter not too long ago.

But who would want to laugh when their princess was banished and their general was imprisoned overnight? In that sense, this stiff, gloomy atmosphere is natural.

This city used to be the exact opposite of the Lawless District, and seeing it in a bleaker state than the District makes me feel bitter.

(Empyrean War)
Varracht-NFace1.png Sandstorm Varracht

How's Her Highness doing?

I'm not the one who wants to know. It's the Escaped Prisoner who's asking. He's been pestering me to do things for him since he can't do them on his own.

He's safe, of course. I don't know what he's trying to do, but he's preparing something.

For now, I'm going to help him. I'm already in too deep to get out now, anyway. Hah hah hah.

(Stormy Revelations)
Varracht-NFace1.png Sandstorm Varracht

Everyone in the Lawless District is well aware of the notoriety of the Sea of Storms. Countless engineers died during the construction of the Oceanic Express across that sea.

If anyone's talking about the latest storm, that's because they know people die every time a storm hits the sea.

(Post-Empyrean War)
Varracht-NFace1.png Sandstorm Varracht

Hah hah. That little girl, she was brilliant, descending on a dragon like that.

Wait, I'd better address her as Her Majesty now. Hah hah.

(Post-Empyrean War)
Varracht-NFace1.png Sandstorm Varracht

He... Did he go peacefully?

... Good. That coward, he ran away before we could have a match, like we said we would after the war.

But I'm sure he's in a better place now. I hope he's able to fly freely now.

(Post-Empyrean War)
Varracht-NFace1.png Sandstorm Varracht

Ghent is changing. I'm not just talking about its scenery; I'm also talking about the people.

I might be disappointed later, but maybe this empress can change the Lawless District as well.

Where did I lose my eye? I've lived my whole life in the Wilderness, slinging guns. That a good enough answer for ya?

Yes, I lost it in a fight. It wasn't a big fight, but my adversary was good. I could've ended him quickly, but I felt mischievous that day and that cost one eye.

At first I had a hard time shooting guns, unable to measure distance without just one eye, but I got used to it.

It's true man are creatures of habit because now I'm getting used to Zeldine's constant criticism. Hah hah hah!

Varracht-Face2-1.png Sandstorm Varracht

What do you think about this [sic] Ghent? To those from the Lawless District, like me, this place is too flashy and crowded.

When I first came here, I couldn't believe each building was painted different color. In whole, the city looked garish to me, almost violently so. Maybe I was instinctively repelled by the city, coming from a simple, rustic town.

It took a while for me to realize this, but Ghent is beautiful in its own right. I still don't like it, though. It looks nice and clean, but I don't feel like I belong here.

When everything's settled, I want to go back home. Where are you from? I hope you'll be able to go back home, too, one day.

Varracht-Face2-1.png Sandstorm Varracht

I cut my ties with Kartel a long time ago, but I'm still as much a part of it as I was before I left it.

I feel bitter about it. Kartel now is just a husk of the organization I dreamed of a long time ago, and I hate to be associated with those knuckleheads.

That's why I want to punish them, for bringing disgrace to my name with their stupidity.

Varracht-Face2-1.png Sandstorm Varracht

I'm tired of the pretentiousness of the people in this place. They think they're being nice to one another, but I say they're being fake.

They can't say no without fearing the judgment of others.

I hate their beating around the bush every time they talk. They ramble on, making sure they don't have to take responsibility if they make a slip of the tongue, and it's giving me a headache! I went to a tavern to have a drink, only to turn around and leave because of annoying people in there. Phew, I can breathe now that I'm here.

Affectionate
Varracht-Face3-1.png Sandstorm Varracht

You remind me of a kid. I saved his [sic] life and he started following me around, begging me to take him as my student.

I just left Kartel and moved from place to place in the Lawless District. I tried to ignore him, because I wasn't interested in doing anything at that time, but he was persistent.

I kept him for a while, to see if he had potential. He did, so I taught him a few tricks. He learned them more quickly than I thought.

I don't know where he is or what he's doing, but I think you'll like him if you meet him.

Varracht-Face3-1.png Sandstorm Varracht

Why romanticism, you ask? It's what keeps man separate from animals.

I'd rather die than give up my convictions. Everyone thinks at one time or another about how he wants to do with his life. And once he's decided on a path, he should go on the path, no matter how difficult it is,

not to prove to others that he can do it, but for his dignity's sake. To me, romanticism is all about being true to myself-that is, a gunslinger, not an outlaw.

What's your conviction? Whatever it is, don't give up on it.

Varracht-Face3-1.png Sandstorm Varracht

When I first met him, he wasn't who he is now.

He was unlearned and stubborn, but he was fun to be around and attracted attention wherever he went. You could bet where there was a crowd, there always was him in its center. He was more passionate than anyone else I knew. He was funny, too. He wasn't exactly righteous, but he never brought harm to anyone.

He was nosy, which got us in trouble more times than I could remember. But we were young. We didn't have anything to our names, but we were happy and we had a goal.

...I didn't know he'd get old so quickly. I thought I'd be the one to go astray, not he.

Sippo [sic]... We used to get drunk and sing out loud together. I miss those days.

Varracht-Face3-1.png Sandstorm Varracht

What have I done since I left Kartel? I traveled from place to place, doing whatever I wanted to do. I saved some people, protected a few villages against Kartel attacks. I kept myself busy.

I've moved across to the mainland because I got tired of dealing with Kartel.

But people here are no better than the Kartels. They're naive and have no sense of self-preservation, probably because of long, undisturbed peace.

But they don't deserve to be killed by Kartel. That's why I've decided to help them. I'm responsible for the creation of Kartel. I want to help get rid of it.

Zeldine has grown as a leader. She even came to thank me in person.

She's no longer the hot-tempered tomboy I remember. Now I have many great expectations of her as the commander of the Garrison.

Me? Hah hah hah. Well, I might have thought the same if I were your age, but now I'm just an old man struggling day by day, just to live.

Varracht-NFace2.png Sandstorm Varracht

You've grown stronger than the last time I saw you. I knew you weren't ordinary, but I never thought you'd grow so much. I don't know if I could beat you if we met on the battlefield.

Hah hah, what? Do I sound weak? I'm only admitting the facts.

You're strong. You've definitely become stronger. I want to see how strong you could become, though I dread that a little bit.

Varracht-NFace2.png Sandstorm Varracht

You mean, that friend of mine who helped us? I can't tell you everything, but he and I once pursued romance and freedom together.

We lost contact a long time ago, and we only recently reunited after bumping into each other.

Fighting back to back with him after so long made me recall the days we spent in the Lawless District together. I wonder if he's there by now...

He left as soon as the war was over. I can't tell you where he is, but you'll see him again soon.

Varracht-NFace2.png Sandstorm Varracht

Are you worried about me? Hah hah. Yes, I can still fight as well as I used to, but I can't recover as quickly.

I haven't fought so fiercely for so long that my shoulders are stiff now. A few scratches, from which I would have recovered in just a couple of days in my prime, are still bothering me.

It's true when people say nobody can stop the clock.

Affectionate
Varracht-NFace3.png Sandstorm Varracht

The Imperial Army may have retreated from Empyrean, but it left its princess behind, along with a sizable regiment of soldiers to protect her.

I don't know what the young Empress wants to do to the Empire, but she'd better not underestimate it.

For now, it's just hiding its claws. This is just-

*Sigh* There's no use talking to you about it. Why don't you tell me about your adventures instead? Listening to you makes me feel better.

Varracht-NFace3.png Sandstorm Varracht

What am I going to do from now on? Well, you don't have to have a plan to live, do you? Now that I'm here, maybe I want to stay here for a little longer, or I could even follow you down to Underworld.

Hah hah. You were so ready to say yes. Thank you, but no. I would probably die quickly if I followed you on your journey.

I'm curious about that airship called the Philasia that Her Majesty gave you, though. I've heard the scientists of the Palace studied it for a long time, but whatever they did to her, I don't understand all the technical terms. I'm just a drifter from the Lawless District.

But now that I know Empyrean is capable of creating airships, I hope it'll help Ghent and the Lawless District interact with each other.
